These actions constitute a complex, on-site, holistic social work intervention that aims at identifying and tackling the factors that function as an obstacle to the integration into school. Social workers employed by the Project engage in actions toward this end on a daily basis in the following townships/neighborhoods: Droseró (in Xanthi prefecture), Ífestos (Hephaestus or Kalkandja) and Alan Kuyu (both in Rhodope prefecture) and the neighborhood at the end of Ávantos Street (in Alexandroupolis). The overarching objective of these actions is to facilitate the connection of the community and the families with the school. The intervention focuses on cultivating the skills and raising the educational expectations of pupils, on utilizing, to the greatest possible degree, the compensatory educational programs that are organized at schools, on securing a conducive and supportive framework at home and at school, and on curbing the various forms of discrimination against the residents of the aforementioned townships that hinder school and social integration of the pupils there. Social workers visit more schools than those where compensatory educational activities take place.

The 2012-13 School Year
Throughout this school year, 577 pupils (221 of whom in primary schools, 306 in secondary schools and 10 in high schools) and their families received support through these actions, while there was special care for 40 pupils with disabilities and special needs.

 

The 2011-12 School Year
Throughout the 2011-12 school year, psychologists and social workers visited the townships where problems of non-timely registration of pupils for school, irregular attendance, early school dropout and low performance in classes are prevalent at a large scale. The associates of the Project made sure that children registered on time for kindergartens and for all grades of primary, secondary, and high schools, and systematically supported schooling and attendance at secondary and high schools, where the proportions of dropout are high.

Summer Compensatory Classes in Townships
From mid July to mid August of 2011, the Project organized in Droseró (Xanthi) and in Ífestos (Komotini) compensatory classes that aimed at helping re-sit pupils or at preparing children who were going to start secondary school or high school in the fall.

“Voyage in the Odyssey”: A Musical-Theatrical Performance
Within the framework of the “Sound and Picture” workshop, children worked in teams to develop their skills, and they designed and staged the musical-theatrical performance entitled “Voyage in the Odyssey”, which was included in the “Eleuthéria” (Liberation Day) festivities in Komotini.
